The ‘Scale Model of São Paulo in 1842’ is 5.1 meters wide by 6 meters long and depicts a cross section of the city of São Paulo. Sculptor Hendrik Bakkenist modeled the imagined space with inspiration from photographs and maps from the 1840s.

The work was restored in 2022, in commemoration of the Bicentennial of Independence. It has a glass enclosure and a raised floor around it so that it can be seen from a better angle, including by wheelchair users.

Estúdio Preto e Branco produced an audiovisual installation with images projected onto the scale model and 4 hanging screens with simultaneous projections. The content elicits questions about imagining the past and the problems involved in portraying the city. The mapping highlights the buildings by lighting specific points, making it easier for visitors to identify the city’s sites.
