The Museum of Sacred Art of São Paulo (MAS-SP) presented the temporary exhibition “Il Cristo Velato” from June 4 to August 2, 2015. The exhibition presented works from the MAS collection and a volumetric projection of the sculpture “Il Cristo Velato “.
Made by the great Neapolitan artist Giuseppe Sanmartino (1723-1793), the original work, representing dead Christ, was carved in a single marble block in 1753 for the Sansevero Chapel – Naples, Italy.
The Museum of Sacred Art of São Paulo, thanks to the modern technology and the authorization granted by the Capella Sansevero Museum, gave its visitors the possibility to admire a reproduction realized with volumetric projection identical to the original one.
The technique used was of volumetric projection on expanded polyurethane sculpture, with the same size of the original work, where the most important volumes of the piece were carved. When the projection is triggered, the result is impressive. The texture of Carrara marble is crisp and convincing.
